The executive offices of our client have been located in the same landmark Michigan Avenue office tower since the mid-1950’s. No significant architectural modifications had taken place since that time, only periodic interior refreshes.

In early-2020, during the height of the pandemic, our client requested that we modernize the executive suite and introduce amenities lacking in the 1950s design. We were charged with preserving and honoring the historic attributes of the interior, primarily the historic plaster work, wainscotings, and wood paneling.

The existing plan had complicated circulation composed of a warren of walls and doors. One could see the space only in segments due to the frequency of visual interruptions. Our team pursued opening the space to provide clear circulation and axial views.

The new design resulted in the introduction of a new reception area, restoration and modernization of the board room, reconfiguring of office spaces, clarification of the arrangement of common areas, and modernization of restrooms and break areas.

Wood and plaster profiles were replicated in renovated areas throughout. Wood panelling was restored. Slab Botticino Classico stone was added to the reception area floor and board room matching the elevator lobby. Finishes were selected to complement the historic character while providing a transitional aesthetic. Modern AV systems were installed throughout.
