Award 2016

Designed as a concept for the old Chicago Motor Club Building, the scheme renders a functional and efficient modern hotel structure that engages the existing historic building and its surrounding context. The architecture is intended to express structural legibility, borrow vocabulary from the Holabird and Root building, respond to environmental conditions and be complementary to the historic structure.

The project would entail the renewal of the historic Chicago Motor Club Building in conjunction with the construction of a new building on the adjacent west site. The addition will rise to the height of the existing building and provide a similar floor-to-floor configuration.

The new contemporary structure would borrow from the material and massing palette of the old. The new and historic structures are connected by an internal alley acting as a transparent vertical easement that will serve programmatically as horizontal and vertical circulation.

The design results in a structure with a restored grand lobby, 153 rooms and suites, modern meeting facilities, a new grand ballroom, spa facilities, a restaurant, a roof top lounge/restaurant, and high-efficiency building systems.
